Hi Mat! Is there any news about any signings coming in January? Anything Solid?
by Chris12/10/2012 12:03:51 PM
Chris, in terms of names, there's nothing concrete as far as I know right now. I'm sure there will be a couple of additions though.
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:05:41 PM
Hey Matt so any new news coming out of the villa camp re Robbie keane
by Andy White12/10/2012 12:05:55 PM
Andy White, when the manager was asked about Keane a couple of weeks ago, he didn't knock down the idea. I can't see it happening if I'm honest, because I don't think he fits the Lambert profile and obviously he is another year older from the player who shone last Jan/Feb. But I've been wrong before!
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:07:59 PM
Is there any truth in the James chester and Derek Boateng rumours? As for Boateng just cant see it for myself, much more so in the case of Chester.
by Quizme12/10/2012 12:08:36 PM
Quizme, I've heard the Chester rumour but not strongly enough to write it. Not sure where the Boateng link came from but it's one I'll look into
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:10:47 PM
I was surprised to see 3 centre halves at a home game. Thought it was a bit negative. At times it looked like BOTH sides were scared of winning on Saturday... Match of the Day were dead right putting us on last (for once)
by Dek12/10/2012 12:11:39 PM
Was the game against Stoke really that much of a horror?
by Birmingham Mail12/10/2012 12:13:44 PM
Dek, the formation switch has been something of a surprise, because Lambert seemed to be finding his way with 4-2-3-1. It has made Villa more solid and harder to beat - the challenge now is keeping it mean at the back, but adding to the attacking threat, because currently Villa are the Prem's lowest scorers with 12 goals
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:14:01 PM
I don't get this 3 CB's is negative stuff. The wing backs bomb on and when Bennett/Stevens are back we'll have more of a threat down the left. Our ball players are in the middle and playing wing backs allows them to get on the pall and pass and probe. Works best with AW partnering Benteke in my opinion as he offers a lot of movement. It's not negative IMO.

any team news for tuesday night? do you think he will go full strength or give players like bent nzogbia a game?
by JOHN12/10/2012 12:14:43 PM
John, Westwood cup-tied so there will definitely be a change in midfield. I reckon Given will come in for Guzan. As for whether he will give the other high-earning, big-name ressies a run-out, I'm not sure.
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:16:10 PM
Mat do you think any chance of gaining any points out of the next 4 league games when firing blanks.
by Terry Jones.12/10/2012 12:16:45 PM
Terry Jones. Four more clean sheets and that's at least four points! Survival in instalments. Take your point about the lack of goals at the other end of the pitch. It will be tough to pick up points away at rejuvenated (for now at least) Liverpool and Chelsea, while Spurs and Wigan at home just after Crimbo also look tough-ish
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:18:41 PM
Thanks for the Robbie Keane insight! With Westwood cup tied for Tuesday are there any thoughts to the game plan Lambert might employ. will he just replace with herd or el Ahmadi or likely change formation altogether. Might we see darren Bent get a start?
by Andy White12/10/2012 12:18:59 PM
Andy Jones, I've found the manager tough to second guess (formation-wise). But he seems pleased with this 5-3-2/3-5-2 system from recent games so he might go with something similar again, possibly replacing Westwood with Delph or El Ahmadi. As for Bent starting, he just might. Perhaps he will rest Agbonlahor and partner Bent and Benteke up top?
I fully expect a low gate on Boxing Day (used to be one of the best attended games of the season in days of yore). Live on telly and no public transport running.. double rate taxis... not augering well for a bumper crowd...
by Dek12/10/2012 12:21:51 PM
Hey, Mr Moderator, that tweet was private!
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:22:18 PM
Dek, is that right about the lack of public transport for Boxing Day? What a pain in the ..... Agree that Dec 26 used to be a real footballing occasion to look forward to. Inconvenient kick off time doesn't really help matters either
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:23:34 PM
Hello Mat, Do you think we might do a Blues i.e. win the carling cup and get relegated too!
by Big VTOS12/10/2012 12:23:59 PM
Big VTOS, it's possible. But I don't think it will happen.
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:24:56 PM
Any news on any player leaving in January? Warnock, Hutton, Dunne, Given, Ireland, Bent etc.
by Chris12/10/2012 12:25:04 PM
Chris, nothing firm. Warnock could stay at Bolton and see out the last six months of his Villa contract there, equally Villa will be keen to do a deal - any deal! - to move Hutton on. The Bent thing rumbles on and on. Villa and Lambert have maintained he will still be at the club on Feb 1. The manager has also said Given is not going anywhere. Don't know re Ireland. Dunne still suffering a 'mystery' injury. Hope that response was vague enough!
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:27:41 PM
Arsenal are considering cancelling their boxing day fixture due to a Tube strike. If there is no public transport on Boxing Day Villa should do the same and use the opportunity to take a winter break. If it's could enough for ARSEne it should be good enough for us.
by chrisscribbles12/10/2012 12:28:42 PM
NO trains on Boxing Day. Skeleton bus services most of which terminate at 7.00pm (before the game finishes)
by Dek12/10/2012 12:28:50 PM
chrisscribbles, I think as soon as the TV schedulers get involved there is no way back...
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:29:30 PM
I there and genuin worry in the Villa camp about relegation ?
by Quizme12/10/2012 12:30:14 PM
Dek, maybe Lambert should get some of the out-of-favour players to run a taxi service! In all seriousness, it is far from ideal - especially at a time when Villa's attendances are already suffering
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:30:49 PM
Quizme, no, not in public anyway. In fact, the manager is eager to stamp out any negative vibes - even in press conferences!
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:32:13 PM
Mat if Benteke does not hit the back of the net soon do you think he will go down in history as the biggest misfit we have had at Villa since Osca Arca.
by Terry Jones.12/10/2012 12:32:26 PM
Terry, you're not a Benteke fan are you? I think he's been a very promising signing. His all round play has impressed. I think he will score goals, but I don't think he can/should carry the scoring burden on his own and it would be interesting to see if the manager can come up with a way of bringing out the best of him and Bent in the same team
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:33:56 PM
Any thoughts as to why Weimann hasn't got a game the last two matches? For me he has been superb so far this season so I can't see why he's been dropped.
by Andy White12/10/2012 12:34:19 PM
Andy White, the only reason I can see if this shift in emphasis to a slightly more defensive policy. I agree that Weimann has shown lots of promise when he has played this season. I'm sure he'll get his chance again soon enough
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:35:54 PM
What to say about Nathan Baker? Looks a complete CB in the Premiership.
by Quizme12/10/2012 12:36:07 PM
Quizme, I wrote in my player ratings with today's match report that he is maturing into a very good defender with the minimum of fuss. Goes about his business quietly and efficiently. He's a modest lad off the field, but become stronger and stronger on it
by Mat Kendrick12/10/2012 12:37:33 PM
